Many thanks to all who replied and just have to tell you that I tried loosening the top fabric in the quilter seems to have done the job. I couldn't believe that such a simply adjustment would help that much. Finished the quilt in two days even with a trip to town for more thread - saying "I can't believe it , I can't believe it!"
