I used small scissors to cut the small pieces out, then used fusible web. I didn't do anything with the edges of the appliques yet. I still have to learn to do the machine appliques, where you use a decorative stitch around the edges after ironing the piece on. Perhaps someone else can give you some better info on this.
I use invisible thread on top for small pieces...use a very tiny zig zag or blanket stitch...If you go slow you can just do a straight stitch at the edge of each piece if you don't have decorative stitches.
