How long are these tails you're all talking about? The trimmings from my bindings are very short (3" maybe) with 45º ends. Sewn together end to end, it'd be so full of seams as to be unuseable as a new binding.
Like another quilter on here said, I have a fear of never having enough so I'm generous, especially with my scalloped edged quilts, and add a bit more binding than needed. Sometimes I cut off about 18" (that's the 'norm') but when I was first beginning last year, I added a lot more than that.
