If the room is already gloomy paint with a lighter color. It will help lighten up the room. As well as using a semi gloss instead of a satin or a flat paint. It will help the light bounce off of the walls.
I like the spinning wheel of color. You could paint with the lightest shade of blue or even white. Also gives you lots of choices for accents for throw pillows, curtains and such!
