If they're tiny (1 inch width) I just hold, otherwise I pin pin pin. It helps me with my accuracy and it makes sure everything is lined up, so it's one less thing to worry about while I'm trying to keep the 1/4 inch seam.
And I always pin intersections to make sure they come out right.
