I press to the side for the quarter blocks then press open when I get two quarter blocks together to put with the other strip of two!

Okay, so the first time you sew, you press to the dark (or whatever side). Then after that, you press the seams open. I guess that would be the best of the two techniques! Thank you both.
This is the same way I make them. I think it helps the center of the block lay flatter.
