They're supposed to. When the baby is laid ON the blanket rather than IN it, they'll be (pardon the pun) points of interest for him or her to reach for, grab hold of, and explore. Just like the knots and strings on a tied baby quilt.
Just feel the need to share a word of caution: Our guild donates quilts for charity and we were told NOT to hand tie baby quilts because the knots can loosen up and swallowing the threads can be a choking hazard. I doubt that chewing on the fabric of the prairie points would be dangerous.
