I have an easier method. I least, I think it is. I always tie where it looks good in the blocks I made, using yarn or crochet thread, and a good sharp needle that will pull through the fabric, with the thread in it, easily.

After taking the stitch in the quilt, I tie the square knot, using the needle,by going over the yarn behind the stitch and then under, and then over again, making 1 1/2 square knots; then go to the next stitch and repeat. You will not cut the thread yet. Also, brush up on how to make a square knot. When you get to the end of the thread, tie the last knot, and cut. Then go back and cut the other knots, leaving the tails as long as you like. I tighten them as I cut and they all come out the same length. It is a lot faster to do, more efficient.
