I wash the flannel I sew with to remove some of the fuzz. I also iron it, and spray it with sizing instead of starch. It helps hold the fibers together and helps tame the stretch factor. For flannel, I spray and iron each side. It tends to make a stiff quilt, but a quick wash when I am done, fixes that. Also helps when you try to machine quilt.
