I'd suggest to use it to make something useable, like a tote bag or patchwork purse, something that you are going to add lining and stablizer to that will help the integrity of the original fabric. I'm glad you aren't thinking of returning it, his heart was in the right place and even though he's a 21 y.o. guy, I've learned that even they enjoy seeing what can magically appear from some bits of fabric!
