My hubby did this with my haircutting scissors that I keep in the bathroom. He started to pick them up one day and I said do not use those and he said "Why not I always use that pair they cut good." Well they do not cut good now. lol. As for my sewing scissors my whole family knows that it is a major offence to even think about touching them.
