The beginning square has no relation to the width of the strips. I just started with a 2 inch square and then "eye-balled" what I thought would be good for the strips. I used 1 1/2 inch strips because they would be 1 inch at the widest stop and I wanted a tight twist. Debd's twist is looser, she posted her measurement on page 5. You can see that no matter what size you choose it will look good. I wonder how it would look to do this around a six inch block as a border???
My block turned out to be 12 inches. Any yes, you just stop when you think you are done. And kids kept saying, "Make it bigger," so I stopped when I ran out of fabric, good thing I didn't have much!
