try about.com. with janet wickell. it's a good starting place for beginners to try out.

she offers lots of easy blocks in a very good format, with illustrations. print out what you like.

follow the links to blocks or whole quilts and go from there. if you don't have trouble following along from printed material, i think you can go on to fons & porter, too.

let us know what you decide. i'll be interesting to know which is really the best starting point.
