it's easy, get some iron-on adhesive, (heat-n-bond) and iron it on the back of the fabric, then cut out your design with a small edge away from the actual design. This edge is what you will sew with out sewing inside the design. The head bond has a paper backing that you peel off, then place on the block you have designated for that design, iron it into place. Take some tear away interfacing and place it on the back of the block. Set you machine to a tight zig-zag and sew around your design, catching the edge of the fabric, so that it is covered with the zig-zag. I would say that it will be easier to do a block at a time, before sewing into a quilt.
