It's for sewing an overcast stitch that's similar to what a serger does. The little edge and flat surface keeps the fabric from rolling as the machine does the overcast. I've been wondering if I might be able to adjust my needle setting and use for a stitch in the ditch but haven't tried it yet. Seems like a possibility.
