I would make the quilt - but I would not spend months and months creating it. Have you ever used the Fun and Done quilt patterns? They are a quilt as you go technique and they are a beautiful quilt when they are finished. There are several patterns from which to choose - I have made 4 of these and they are a lot of fun to make and you can give a person a quilt that they can use and enjoy.
