I'm thinking it's another case of things are not made as well as they used to be. My Rowenta was purchased in the 90's & still works perfectly.
I also have an old Rowenta about the same age & wouldn't trade it for the world. I've never had a problem with leakage. My DH is on his 2nd iron in 10 years. (He irons all our clothing, I just iron fabric. It works for me :D )
