If your're not sure of whether she might keep it or not, and you wanted to give her something like that, why not get some fleece and make her a fleece throw, with the fringed edges. Then if it seems that she is going to keep it, you could make her a normal lap quilt for later. You would still be out the expense of the fleece, but not the time and effort of the normal quilt. Just a suggestion.
