I made a quilt for a cousin for a wedding. He later came up to me and let me know that their dog chewed it up and wanted me to make him another one. I let him know that it was a gift for their wedding. They aren't getting married twice. I didn't make them another one. I knew that they wouldn't take care of it. For you I would wonder what would happen if you asked her to help make a quilt? That way she would better understand what it takes as well as having that connection with family.
