I really don't have a pattern, so this is the process I use. Since I do hexagon flowers that finish out at 4" in diameter, i know i need at least a 5" square traveling pin cushion.
1. Find a scrap of batting or felt 6" x 22" at least 20", this one was 22".
2. Gather your scraps, or use a 6" x 22" piece if you don't want to piece it.
3. Attach the front to the batting, and stitch a design or anything to keep the batting in place. The batting I used is very thin. But you can use felt, flannel, or thicker batting for the center.
4. Square up your quilted fabric.
5. Place the backing fabric face down on the front fabric or with right sides together stitch around, be sure to leave an opening for turning rightside out.
6. Turn and press your (mini table runner). You now will have about 5" to 5 1/2" x 21 1/2".
7. Stitch around the perimeter and "do your thing" if you want to quilt the back.
8. Fold each end to desired depth for pockets, keeping in mind the design and placement of the pin cushion.
9. Stitch the pockets in place and divide as needed for notions with machine stitch.
10. My pockets vary, they are never the same on either side. Use what works best for you!
11. Fold and check placement of where you want the cushion to go as well as the size and shape of the pincushion.
12. Make the pincushion and fill with walnut shells, fiberfill, etc.. Set it aside you will add it last.
13. Decide on the closure you will use, elastic hairbow, button, ribbon, etc.
13. Stitch button hole, or fastener to close.
14. Last use fabric bond to attach pincushion to fabric. A little goes a long way. Put the adheasive on the pincushion and spread with a toothpick. Just a little!
15. Let dry, it dries fast. and fill it up and go.
I would love to see your designs! If you have questions pm me. thanks all!
