I carry a small bucket into the garden whenever I plant or dig in a row. Every little stone and rock goes into the bucket and then dumped into my garden border project. The borders are about three feet wide and the bottom is covered with old magazines and newspapers with weedcloth on top. The rocks go on top as a permanent mulch, no weeding. I have daylilies planted in the beds. The goal is to have all of the fence line done in this border.
Oh, that is so nice looking! I should try it along my garden borders. Heaven knows I have plenty of rocks. I have glacial till here too and there is no digging a hole of any size without hitting rocks and stones.
I use newspaper as mulch in my garden beds. I put it down 6 or 7 layers deep then add a layer of bark mulch on top of that. By the time that all breaks down, the soil is so loose, I can pull most weeds right out, roots and all. I also leave the leaves that come down every fall right in the garden to decompose and help mulch the beds. Weeding is not too hard to keep up with except certain ones that I am about to declair I planted on purpose. LOL
