The biggest piece of advice is don't fuss over perfect stitches. You are human not a machine, they are NOT all going to be the same size or in a perfect row! Variations is what makes them beautiful.
Other than that, don't pull your thread taught, keep it loose. I think you'll enjoy it. Quilting is my favorite part.
