I've done that exact thing. I have also: poured Sprite into my steam iron (that takes the cake), sewn a safety pin used for basting into the border of a quilt, sewn a straight pin into a quilt (I only discovered it after the quilt had been in use for a month or so), and many other mistakes along the lines of sewing without any bobbin thread, putting pieces in backwards, etc.
