Not crazy and definitely not wasteful! The balls are cute and very colorful. You should do some little ones. They'd make cute Christmas ornaments. Use your regular scraps for the base and Christmas fabric for the top layer. I have a little tree for my sewing room so I think I'll try this out. :P
I like this idea, plus you could do that for any holiday, just use the appropriate scraps.
