It is kind of like just watching and listening to your neighbors. You know a lot about them but they do not know you at all. Once we see someone posting on a regular basis we begin to look for them and a lot become friends. I recognize regulars by their user name often and correspond with quite a few.
There is a few i can pick out by name, Not many. Now the avatars, I keep track of those! know who I am talking to by that, and just when I finally start to recognize someone they up and change it!

i m guilty of changing my avatar, i changed it the other day!
It is fun to just go around and comment. I know I love getting comments on my pictures so I make sure to leave one on someone elses. All those comments add up.
