Fray check, then use matching thread, use teeny stitches, and satin stitch across (while Fray check is still wet!) allow to dry and press. Fray check again.
This will only work on things that aren't going to be "loved to death", and I wouldn't do it on red fabric. Otherwise it has worked for me on both quilt blocks and garments.
