You can use either one. It suggests 3/16". Poly is more relaxed and cotton is more rigid. I found the cotton cord cheaper. 3 bucks for 100' and 50' built one like I have. As far as material you can use anything cut it or rip it 1.5" and wrap then use zig zag stitch but I bet you already know that.

Can you use the nylon type cord or all cotton? I 'm gonna make one for sure..
