Now that I've posted this to facebook my teacher explained I was supposed to subtract seam allowance from 6 inch instructions, then half, then add seam allowance back. She didn't tell me because she was kidding when she suggested doing one after I did the 6 inch. Now she know that I take these things as a dare!
