When I posted my Wings Block tutorial I used several steps

to make a 12 1/2" quilt block you will need a 2 1/2" acrylic template to use one of my grids that has 6 rows of 6 blocks in each row.

For this method you would need my 30 degree template
1. Cut swatches
2 sew swatches together
3 Cut out a square from the center with my 30 degree template
4 Cut the square into two triangles
5 Repeat for a mirror image
6 Sew the 2 halves together

This results in a pieced square that is ready to be cut into a Wings Block

One of the things I hear is that people don't like the waste that is left over. So I worked on and came up with paper templates to us in place of cutting out swatches.
The paper templates also eliminate the need to cut out a square with the 30 degree template and cut it into 2 triangles.

So the new steps using the paper templates are:

1. Print off paper templates
2 Cut out the templates
3 Pin the templates to fabric
4. Trim the fabric close to the edge of the template
5 Repeat this for all 4 pieces
6 Sew the top and bottom fabrics together
7 Sew the two halves together creating the pieced square ready to be cut into the Wings Block

Once you have the joined fabrics into a pieced square you will need a 2 1/2" template to cut the final Wings Block. This is the same for both methods

So to recap this paper template method eliminates the need for:

Template with 30 degree mark
Cutting out two full squares and cutting them into triangles
Very little waste leftover.

Here is the PDF for the Paper Templates

Print off the Paper Templates

Cut the paper templates apart

Cut out and trim the paper templates

Trim the fabric to the template. To keep from cutting too deep I used scissors instead of a rotary cutter

Look at the templates and see the dotted line I drew to represent the seam line.

Pin the paper templates to your fabric. This wil be the left side.

Fabric trimmed to match the templates

Lay the bottom fabric face down onto the top fabric and match up the bottom edges.

Flip the templates over and repeat the above steps to make a mirror image half,

Sew the two halves together

Sew across the seam lines. At this point if you prefer you could leave the paper on the fbric til after you have sewn the seam. That way you could follow the sewing line to sew the seam.

Match the two seams in the center

I like to tack the seams. So run a needle up through the fabric

Now you have a tack and you can trim it - sorry this pic was a bit blurry

Place the joined fabrics on a mini cutting mat and place your 2 1/2" template on the square. Make sure you match up all 4 corners on the template to the seams. DON'T let it move as you cut out the Wings Block

Cut along each side til you get it all cut out. Make sure you watch that the template doesn't move as you cut.

Run it through a second time being careful not to pull it out

This is the joined fabrics now in a square ready for the last cutting out of the Wings Block
