My first quilt was a red hat applique, went to class with my brand new machine supply list, and no clue how to even thread the machine :) :) :) After first class went home, finished the blocks, went to the next class sew proud of myself, teacher explained stippling to me, I went home stippled (without practicing first, oops) turned out pretty good if I say so myself. It hangs in my mothers entry way now.
