First determine what size you need to trim them all to be the same. It does NOT need to be as small as 5", I am sure! --probably 5 3/4" will be enough to square them all up.
You will want a "one-patch" pattern, where all the squares are cut to the same shape, whether half-square rectangles, HS triangles, or something else, because then you don't have different amounts of the squares going into seam allowances.
