They are really fun to make and yes I did use the tool they said to use. You can use a cut toothbrush if it has a hole in the end or even a large safety pin with a hole. Try it. - just remember to not make your stitches too tight so it lays flat.
Hands were not sore - this project went very fast and was quite easy to do. Only suggestion is that your pieces all be at least 45 " long so you don't have to keep stopping to add pieces. I really had fun making this and would love to make more.
