The only problem with tear away is that is can distort your stitches and fabric if you are not careful. The only time I use something on top of the fabric is if the fabric has nap, like terry cloth, toweling, velvets, etc. and it is usually something that dissolves with steam or water, but I am not an expert, I just do things that have worked for me.
