Go for it. There are no rules. If you will get more use out of the comforter by making mug rugs, have fun with it. What good is a comforter that you don't use?
I agree, they just sit taking up closet space that could be used for other things.
I was also thinking, with the price of cotton going up up and away, this may be a cheaper way of getting fabric for backings, etc.
