I think, but not 100% sure, that, 'back in the day', the parlor cabinets were more expensive because they looked like furniture and less like a sewing machine, just as you thought. I have a parlor cabinet but I find it very heavy looking and I prefer the looks of the regular treadle cabinet....maybe because they look so old fashioned.
