From my own schooldays, I have the same memory (40s and 50s). I was a first grade teacher. (Retired in '98.) My students made Valentine bags (white lunch sacks from the grocery store) and decorated them I printed their first name on each bag so they would be easy to read. Then I lined them up on the counter. Each child had a turn to go to the back of the room and distribute their Valentine cards and/or wrapped treats. This gave them extra practice in reading and matching names of their classmates. At the end of the day, we took time to sit and enjoy the things that were in our own bags. I had sent a note home to instruct the parents to let the child address their own valentines and to write who the valentine was FROM on the back of the CARD (not the envilope) because they always threw away the envelopes. It's just what 6-yr-olds do!
