I do this as well, and heat set it. I wash it by hand several times to make sure it is permanent before trimming it to size and sewing it on the quilt (with some printer inks it is best to let it sit for 24 hours before it becomes permanent). I often include a clip art appropriate for the quilt or to the recipient. I try to name the quilt, and put that on the label too. Lastly, in size 8 font, I put care instructions at the bottom of the label.
