While re-reading this thread, I have an idea. Auto supply places have this no-slide mat that folks will put over the fender so they put tools on it. My dad showed it to me - stuff does NOT move.
Maybe you can put something like this on the table so stuff doesn't move quite so easily. I may try this on my next sewing adventure...
