Cats don't like sticky stuff on their paw pads and double sided tape every 2" or so on a piece of cardboard placed on your counters will discourage them from going on them. I don't allow my two cats to go on my kitchen counters for sanitary reasons as well as for their safety...I don't want them to get burned if they jump on the glasstop stove when it's hot.
