Could you list the cutting deminisions for the center along with the instructions for piecing it together with the triangles from the book? I would approach the center block like this: using the 9 patch system. Divide the patch into 9 equal squares. Build one square at a time. Looks like most of the squares are made up of flying geese and half square triangles. So the "center" white square where you would be placing your applique would be made up of 5 pieces of joined white fabric. Hope this is clear as mud. LOL
