Offhand I can think of paper being used in paper piecing which is a technique quite different from the usual piecing. Also paper can be used as a foundation for strip piecing which is a great way to use up scraps. Back during depression times apparently they even used paper as batting for insulation ( I read that somewhere). I'm sure there are more ways.
