about 11 years ago I bought a comforter which covered the top of the bed and had a ruffle attached to the underside of the comforter on 3 sides. It looked very nice. When I decided to use the comforter on the futon for company, it was too long so I simply removed the ruffle and it works perfectly. I think your suggestion would work well.
