I would think about finding some sort of storage unit, so that you can keep your sewing, or at least what you're working on, in the living room.

There are several older, free standing sewing stands. There are craft units, cabinets, secretary units, etc that may be repurposed for your sewing needs. There are some who are taking china cabinets and putting their colorful fabrics in behind the glass area, using drawers and cabinets for the rest of their sewing items and supplies. Check out garage sales, craigslist (free), freecycle, and you might even think about posting a looking for or wanting ad.

I would try to arrange my living room so I could keep working even when the family comes home.
