I'm going to be a rebel here, and go against the flow, but I have really come to appreciate the beauty of a true OBW where you allow them to flow one into the other. (ie. I prefer the first one). I have helped several people on their design boards as they "played with" their hexagons, although I've never made a OBW myself. I would vote for playing around with the hexagons without the contrasting colour triangles, and then use the contrast in the border. If you wish to separate some hexagons with the border colour and use them in the border, that would look wonderful. But I say, enjoy the uniqueness of a true OBW that sets it apart. I am including a photo of my sister Barb's OBW that she just finished to show you what I mean.
