My DJ is in browns and muslin. The pieces are so small that I don't think you have anything to worry about. You're not going to wash your quilt every week. You wouldn't do that with any other quilt either.
DJs have been done in all kinds of colors -- from the original colorway to specific colors to scrappy.
I say use what you've been given. You could call your quilt The Neighborly Jane or Neighbor Jane.
