I know just what you mean about see-through. On my Mother's Grandmother's Flower Garden, she connected her blocks with a thin white fabric. I used lightweight batting, and a pure white back, a Cotton Sateen. The result is that the entire quilt is see-through when held against a light. If I had it to do over again, I would select a heavier-weight backing of white, maybe with a white-on-white texture.
