As a Child my dad and I would eat "little fishies"from Delmonte in a large oval can with tomato sauce. I also love herring in cream sauce. Last Spring in Holland we stopped at an outdoor shop in a town square. They were preparing herring mildly pickled to eat right there. I have pictures of DH holding the tail and lowering the headless cleaned fish into his mouth for a bite.
Yes I did try it. More firm than sardines but truly delicious.
