If you plan to cut lots of strips, getting a June Tailor Shape Cut mat will help keep your cuts straight. I prefer using that to using a ruler, although sandpaper dots on the bottom of my ruler do help keep it from slipping. Also, when using a ruler, I am careful to keep part of my hand on the mat (part of hand on ruler, part on mat); that also helps prevent slipping.
