I've never seen treatment like that at a quilt show. Quite often people do touch the quilts, usually to cautiously look at the back, but picking at the applique? That's really tacky. Most quilt shows only accept quilts that are in good condition, clean, and free from odors, pet hair, etc. Mildew is not acceptable, especially since you can't help one quilt rubbing against another when they're being hung, taken down, stacked. I know that rain occasionally happens (e.g. Sisters Outdoor quilt show) but usually the quilts are quickly taken down and brought inside to dry. Leaving them out is not acceptable. So sorry you had this experience.
