I think here is your problem, a 2.5 " sqr. will not sew evenly to a 3" sqr. you would need a 2.5"x3" to make this work. However I do not see why you would not simply make all the sqrs 3"....I would have to make a sample to check the math but a simple adjustment to the strip length would make this a much easier quilt to put together...I hope this helps
